Email SPAM & Anti-Virus Solutions

SPaM Solutions

What is SPaM?

SPaM is unsolicited bulk email, usually advertising, on the Internet or Usenet newsgroup postings sent to a large number of people who didn't ask for it. The act of sending spam is "spamming." Someone who sends spam is a "spammer." The term "spam" probably comes from the Monty Python sketch where the name of the canned meat product is used so often that it crowds everything else out. Spam in this sense is the electronic equivalent of junk mail sent to "Occupant", except that the recipient pays the vast majority of the cost receiving the unwanted mail. It has evolved from simply being a nuisance to becoming a significant problem, especially for businesses.

At Fluid Consulting, Inc., we believe in an approach that removes the hassles of spam without further inhibiting the productivity of our client. We use three primary methods to control SPaM:

Blacklist - Yes, we also use blacklist, however, our blacklist contains only the addresses of the most egregious spammers on the Internet. While conservative, our blacklist can immediately block nearly 10 percent of our client's inbound spam.

Fingerprinting - Messages not blocked by blacklisting are fingerprinted to detect matches with known spam message characteristics.  The fingerprinting database aggregates data from all spam blocked by our system allowing the fingerprinting process to become more intelligent and refined as more mail is processed. Messages identified as spam are fingerprinted and given a unique id based on their content. If these messages come through our system again, the fingerprint is detected and the message is marked as spam.

Rules-Based Scoring - We assign scores to messages based on more than 20,000 rules that embody and define characteristics of spam and legitimate email. Points are added to the score if a message contains characteristics of spam; and points are subtracted if it contains many characteristics of legitimate email. When a message's score reaches a defined threshold, it is flagged as spam.

Anti-Virus Solutions

While many companies install and run anti-virus software on users' desktops and gateway servers, the fast-moving nature of virus transmission today requires a more rapid response than desktop and gateway solutions can deliver. Also, relying on one anti-virus software package alone is not enough.

A company's reputation is important, and being the source of a damaging virus, worm, or Trojan horse that infects the systems of clients, partners, and suppliers can do harm to that reputation. Therefore, in addition to securing inbound email and ensuring viruses do not enter the corporate network, we also scan outbound email for viruses to protect the companies with whom your organization communicates.

We employ a layered approach to virus scanning. We have relationships with vendors such as Sophos, Symantec and Trend Micro to give us worldwide coverage and the ability to react more quickly to virus outbreaks.

      Multi-Engine Scanning

  • We maintain very close developer relationships with our anti-virus partners.
  • Because stopping viruses is especially time critical, our partners often work with us at every stage in the development of virus remedies.
  • As a consequence, we typically deploy protection from new viruses hours before new signatures are publicly released.
  • Additionally, we are able to provide immediate protection prior to the release of any anti-virus engine update by using its powerful policy and attribute blocking capability to block specific kinds of attachments or filter email based on specific characteristics of a message.
